The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) will introduce 17 new three-year Higher Nitec courses in 2025 as part of its ongoing efforts to roll out an enhanced three-year curricular leading directly to a Higher Nitec certification. This new curricular structure, targeted for full implementation by Academic Year (AY) 2026, is designed to provide ITE graduates with deeper industry-relevant skills, enhancing their employability and providing a strong foundation for further education and skills upgrading throughout their careers.
The phased implementation began in 2022, with ITE successfully launching 25 Higher Nitec courses by 2024. The addition of the 17 courses will expand the total offerings to 42 by 2025. The new three-year Higher Nitec courses that will start in 2025 include:

Background Information on the Enhanced Three-Year Higher Nitec Curricular Structure
Previously, the two-year Nitec
programmes, and the Higher Nitec
programmes which were mostly two years in duration were offered separately, requiring about four years to complete both. The new enhanced curricular structure integrates Nitec
and Higher Nitec
curricula into a streamlined three-year programme by removing overlapping competencies, allowing students to achieve a Higher Nitec
certification faster. Designed with a deeper emphasis on skill depth, the curriculum equips ITE graduates with a stronger foundation, ensuring they are better prepared for employment and positioned to pursue further education and lifelong professional growth.
Under the new curriculum, students start with broad-based foundation courses in Year 1 to build essential industry-relevant skills. They then progress to take more specialised modules in Years 2 and 3, culminating in the attainment of a Higher Nitec
certification. A key feature of the enhanced curriculum is the increased focus on internships, where students will benefit from two internship stints – three months in Year 2 and six months in Year 3. Supported by ITE’s strong industry partnerships, the internships are designed to progressively build practical competencies, providing valuable hands-on experience to enhance learning outcomes and employability.
Sylvia Khuan, a final-year student from the Higher Nitec
in Sport Management course at ITE College Central, is among the pioneer cohort graduating from the enhanced three-year Higher Nitec
programme this December. An avid football player since the age of 14, she was encouraged by her coach to explore opportunities in sports. Recognising the programme as a viable pathway to fast-track her education while gaining strong industry-relevant skills, Sylvia decided to enrol. Reflecting on her nine-month internship experience at a local gym, Sylvia shared, “I was able to apply what I learned in class to real-world situations. It sharpened my communication and problem-solving skills, deepened my understanding of workplace expectations, and helped me grow in confidence to take on new challenges, both in school and at work.”
To support students with diverse learning profiles, ITE provides an accelerated pathway for those with the abilities and aptitude to complete the Higher Nitec
certification in just two years. This pathway is also open to GCE O-Level holders and those entering ITE through the Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP). For students who require additional help, learning support will be provided. Graduates of the Higher Nitec
programme can explore further upgrading opportunities, such as ITE's Work-Study Diplomas and Technical Diplomas which would enable approximately 1,700 ITE graduates to upskill to a diploma within ITE by 2025.
Ms Low Khah Gek, Chief Executive Officer of ITE, said, “The enhanced three-year Higher Nitec
curricular structure is designed to be flexible and responsive to industry needs. With extended industry attachments, students gain deeper skills and hands-on experience, empowering them to excel in the workforce and embrace new opportunities for growth.”
