This course equips trainees with the skills, knowledge and professional attributes to manage refraction cases and provide good ophthalmic solutions to meet the eye care needs of various patient profiles. Trainees will learn advanced refraction techniques, how to create good myopia management plans, manage challenging dispensing cases, effective communication skills and how to use various diagnostic ophthalmic instruments.

 

Prerequisite:

  • Work well with others in a team environment
  • Customer service oriented and able to articulate professional advice
  • Able to work retail hours

 

Job role:

An Optician (Dip) is an eye care professional who prescribes and dispenses optical aids, manages refractive errors and provides good ophthalmic solutions. He/she may work in a variety of settings such as independent or joint practice, in a hospital, eye care centre, optical laboratory or retail store.

 

Training pattern:

Day Release - Trainees attend lessons at ITE for one to two day per a week and spend the remainder of the work-week at the workplace for OJT.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum entry requirements:

  1. ITE graduates from any one of the following courses + pass company screening & interview;
    • Nitec in Opticianry graduates with GPA ≥ 2

    OR

  2. In-service employees+ with:
  • Equivalent qualifications:
    • ACOPOD+R, and
    • Workplace Literacy & Numeracy (WPLN) Level 5 and above 
  • Relevant work experience of at least 1 year 
  • Employer recommendation letter

         +In-service employee may be invited for an admission interview
